When the mysterious, electronic combo, Girl One And The Grease Guns, decided to end their sonic mission in 2019 (after releasing seven 7" singles, one 12" single, one full length album, one mini-album and one compilation CD) fans of the band were left wondering if they would ever hear anything from those elusive individuals ever again.
They didn't have to wait very long to find out - because, from the smouldering ashes came Sissy Space Echo & The Invisible Collaborators.
Their debut 7" was a split single (with The Edible Eyes) and was released on Next Phase : Normal Records in December, 2019. The Sissy Space Echo & The Invisible Collaborators track, "The Butterfly (Fill The Frame)" was a departure from the typical sound of their previous incarnation. Utilising guitars, very much to the forefront, and displaying a strong Velvet Underground and Nico influence - would this seemingly new direction mark the end of the lo-fi electronic buzz and sometimes scratchy, sometimes swelling synth sounds they had become known for ?
The simple answer to that was, "no". Because just a few months later, Sissy Space Echo & The Invisible Collaborators were back again - this time with a couple of new recordings on the Next Phase : Normal Records 20 track compilation CD, "Signals, Wires & Amplifiers". The synths had returned, along with the guitars, and the pop sounds were in full flow.
Which brings us right up to date, and their new release on Old Bad Habits label. "The Day The Earth Caught Fire" is, once more, full-on electro-pop. Like a 1950s sci-fi movie soundtrack, with eerie theremin effects, sonic beeps and vibrant lead guitar...the noise of The Invisible Collaborators underpinning Sissy Space Echo's sweet, but also ominous, vocal.
The flipside brings more electronic soundscapes - but this time the buzz of 1980s 8-bit home computers, combined with a punk-influenced guitar coda, on the track "They'll Fix You (They Fix Everything)". It's short, it's sharp, it's pure Sissy Space Echo & The Invisible Collaborators.
This is a band who don't stick to one style. They're just as likely to produce a fuzzed-up drone rock record as they are a synthpop indie dancefloor filler. Or, they might not do either of those things. They are Sissy Space Echo & The Invisible Collaborators. They're something of an enigma...and they do exactly what they want.
